How I Think About Leadership

The way I think about leadership comes from the experiences that continue to influence my life. As I've reflected on the meaning of those experiences, I've come to see connections I hadn't noticed before, connections that have reshaped the way I understand leadership.

Leadership isn't simply about making better decisions. It's about understanding what has shaped us, creating a future worth building, and intentionally leading in ways that make that future possible.

Over the past three decades in education and throughout my journey as superintendent of Mariemont City Schools, I've come to believe that impactful leadership is rarely the result of one thing. Instead, it emerges where three realities come together.

The Dots that Shape Us

Every leader has experiences that quietly shape how they see the world.

Some inspire us.

Some challenge us.

Some change us forever.

I think of these experiences as the dots of our lives. The work of leadership is learning to connect them. Because when we do, we better understand who we are, what we believe, and the future we feel responsible for creating.

But the experiences themselves don't shape our leadership. It's the meaning we assign to them that does. We don't get to choose every dot in our lives, but we do get to choose what we carry forward from those experiences and which ones deserve to influence us as leaders.

The work of connecting our dots is never finished. As we continue to work and live we're always discovering new experiences that deepen, challenge, and sometimes even change how we lead.

Consistent Structure

The Leadership Spiral

Personal meaning fuels our leadership, but that alone isn't enough.

Leadership also needs structure.

I've found that leadership is rarely linear. Different moments require different kinds of leadership. Sometimes the moment calls us to invest in ourselves or develop others. Sometimes it requires us to clarify a vision and build a plan. Other times, leadership simply means executing with consistency and purpose.

That's why I developed the Leadership Spiral, a practical framework that helps leaders recognize what leadership requires in the moment.

Whether we're growing ourselves, guiding others toward a shared vision, or executing meaningful work, the spiral provides a consistent structure for turning vision into reality.

Personal meaning and consistent structure only matter if they become visible in the way we lead.

Leadership is ultimately expressed through the choices we make every day, and lasting impact comes from intentional action repeated with consistency over time.

Within each loop of the Leadership Spiral are practical strategies for leading well. They emerged from years of research, observation, and experience and are designed to help leaders put the framework into practice every day.

Intentional action is where our leadership becomes visible.

This framework has shaped some of the most meaningful work of my career.

It guided our twelve-year journey to Destination 2026.

It influenced the development of our new strategic blueprint, Destination NEXT.

It continues to shape my daily work in Mariemont City Schools and it informs my writing, speaking, and the leadership development I facilitate.

While the context may change, the purpose remains the same: Help leaders align what intend to do with what other people actually experience.

That conviction guides my leadership every day because leadership isn't measured solely by what we accomplish. It's measured by the experiences we create and the people we influence along the way.

Every conversation.

Each one leaves a mark on someone.
